A structure of a teaser trailer is very similar to that off a short film or feature length film. With the idea of using Todorov's narrative structure of equilibrium-(plot point 1)- disequilibrium/ mid point -(plot point 2)- equilibrium. This structure is identifiable with most teaser trailers. With teaser trailers they would normally have extras included to enhance the creativity of the trailer but also providing the information of cast members- mainstream or not so mainstream. As well as the snapshots I have taken of the following. A teaser trailer would normally be under two minutes where as theatrical trailer which could be up to five minutes.
Teaser trailers have four purposes:
Teaser trailers have four purposes:
- Product- demonstrating what the item is they are trying to sell to the audience
- Promote- advertise the new film to the targeted audience, to give them understanding and information as to what the film is about encouraging them to watch it or not.
- Placing
- Publicity- to get the product out to a wide audience. To get as many people interested in this.
Teaser trailers often start with the image on the left indicating who can watch the following film. This could affect the target audience, by restricting who can watch the film. Also by having this at the beginning of the trailer shows that the trailer falls in lines of guideline length.
Followed by the ident or idents that were involved in the making of the feature length film. Giving the film its brand for which the audience can identify.
Teaser trailers often have added phrases throughout to add to the suspense of the trailer.
When the film is going to be released into cinema. It advertises when the product is going to be able to be viewed from, which is good as the audience are aware as to when to watch out for the new release. Builds up the anticipation and suspense which encourages them to want to watch it straight away as trailers are usually released a thew months before the film is released into cinemas. This in effect gains a greater box office interest than it does for the release of the film onto DVD as an audience cannot always wait to watch it when it is released to DVD.
Adding the biggest actors/ actresses. Known people that can influence an audiences choice to watch the film. If the audience like other films they have starred in are influenced into watching new releases they are going to star in. Johnny Depp a well known actor who had starred in a variety of different films. Almost instantly getting a bigger audience than expected.
To allow the audience to be prepared as to when it will be coming to cinema/ DVD. This is an alternative version of the ending credit to the teaser trailer as to what it could consist of.
Other actors who are starring in the film, the directors, writers and others. These people can also influence an audiences view as to whether or not to watch the film. If a person has watched something created by these people can also encourage a wider audience than intended. A good example of a well known director/ producer is Tim Burton and if an audience has enjoyed previous films created by him are more than likely to want to watch the following films they are going to create.
Publicising on social networking sites so an audience can get more information from the film, extra previews of the film, behind the scenes. This is a really good item to include when I create my own teaser trailer but not necessarily like the one to the side but more like the above. This also helps with the idea of the social aspect of communicating to others the new releases and hence once again providing a wider audience as the more people that know about the new release are more likely to contribute to the consumption of the product.
